Stormwater Management and Erosion Control

In 2010, Patriot RC&D finished a $400,000, four-year sediment and erosion control project funded through an EPA/Mass. Department of Environmental Protection grant to protect the Charles River Watershed. Our 13 partners included Boston Parks Department, Mass Audubon, City Soil, and New Boston Development Fund.

The Patriot Resource Conservation and Development Area Council was awarded a $230,000 grant through the state Department of Environmental Protection with funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a research project designed to improve erosion and sedimentation control, as well as storm water management, at construction sites. With matching funds of $210,000, the project budget totaled $440,000.

The three-year grant started in the spring of 2006 and was conducted at the Olmsted Green construction site in Mattapan, a 38-acre mixed-use development project on the former Boston State Hospital property.

The goal of the project was to facilitate the use of compost and amended soils to control erosion, manage storm water run-off, and reduce nonpoint source pollution during and after construction. The project compared the compost-based methods with current standard methods such as geosynthetic silt fencing and hay bales. It used compost and mulches produced and marketed in Boston, with donations of product from Apple D’Or Tree, Inc. and WeCare Organics, LLC.

This project was financed with Federal Funds from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (the Department) under an s. 319 competitive grant.  The contents do not necessarily reflect the views and policies of EPA or of the Department, nor does the mention of trade names or commercial products constitute endorsement or recommendation for use.
